About Mr. Berrigan
My name is Matt Berrigan, Grade 8 Humanities teacher at Heritage Heights School in De Winton, Alberta. This site is meant to give students access to all of the background material that they need in order to be successful in my Sociual Studies and Language Arts classes.
I am a graduate of Foothills School Division, having obtained my diploma from Education Plus in Black Diamond in 2000. I attended Lethbridge Community College and the University of Lethbridge, where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Education in Social Studies. I graduated with great distinction in 2006. I obtained my Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania in 2009.
I have taught at Cayley School and Turner Valley School prior to coming to Heritage Heights and have experience teaching both at the elementary and junior high school levels. I was the Foothills School Division Edwin Parr Award nominee in 2007, a recipient of the Province of Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010 and was honoured as a distinguished alumnus of Lethbridge College in 2010. I have been recognized within Foothills School Division for local excellence in teaching in 2007, 2010 and 2012. I have recently been given the honor of having the opportunity to present research that I have done on teaching history through story to reluctant learners at the International Academic Forum in Kobe, Japan in October of 2015. I was also a presenter on the same topic at the 2017 Palliser Region Teacher's Convention.
In the summer of 2016, I married Chelsea McNutt, who teaches Grade 5 at Turner Valley School, in Central Park, New York City. My kids are Kalvin and Arya.
