Welcome to the students and families of Grade 8 at Heritage Heights School. I always look forward to the beginning of the school year. From the anticipation of new beginnings, new classes, new school supplies, new clothes and reconnecting with friends, the new school year is a time of renewal. Although it is at this time that we bid a fond farewell to the summer that was, we now look forward to the next step in your journey of life. This year is going to be FUN - but as with anything, you will get out of it what you put into it!
I’ve been fortunate enough to get to know many of the students entering my class this year throughout my time at Heritage Heights. Some I coached last year in flag football, others were involved in my Legends of Knowledge tournament, and more still were in the classes that I worked in occasionally while they were in Grade 6.
In my opinion, this is the best year for social studies, with the best topics to be studied. We will be covering everything from Renaissance Europe to the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs to ancient and modern Japan. In humanities, language arts and social studies are intertwined, and as such, many of the books and stories that we read are going to be related to the interesting and engaging topics that we are studying. For more information on what we are studying this year, please go to www.mrberrigan.com.
In addition, I strongly encourage you to make the most of your experience in Grade 8 by taking the opportunity to participate in some of the many extracurricular programs that we offer. Athletically, Grade 8 students can participate in volleyball, basketball, badminton, flag football and track and field. Artistically we have an incredible musical theatre program that allows student participation both on stage and behind the scenes as well as a very highly regarded band program.
I like to communicate assignments and announcements in a multitude of different ways.
I send regular texts through remind.com – please sign up by typing rmd.at/grade8berr into the browser of your smartphone, or by texting @grade8berr to (780) 800-7564.

I appreciate the opportunity that I have to do something that I love and for the position that I am in to be a part of the lives of the Grade 8 students of this community. I am so excited for the year to begin and look forward to getting to know you all as we embark on this journey together!
